This is the first installment of our “Manna Minute” segment written by our eBerkshire coordinator Corey McLaughlin.
In these uncertain times, Christians must claim God’s promise with haste, “Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns!” (Ps. 96:10; ESV). It is a proclamation declared five times in Holy Writ (1 Chron. 16:31; Ps. 93:1; 97:1; 99:1). Four questions come to mind:
- Who reigns? A Lord? No. The term is absolute and exclusive, The LORD – all capital letters indicate Yahweh is His name, the covenant keeping God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; the Promise Keeping God of the Jesus, the Apostles, and the Church.
- What does he reign over? Not just Israel or the Church, but all nations, people, languages, and tongues. The sun never sets on the sovereignty of God. Yet God is not just sovereign in the sense that He merely has authority over all the earth (Ps. 97:1), but He actually and actively exercises dominion according to His good pleasure as its only true King (Ps. 135:6; 115:3; Dan. 4:35; Is. 46:10).
- How does He reign? Psalm 96 continues, “Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the LORD, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and all the peoples in His faithfulness” (vv. 11-12). This will happen as Paul said to the Athenians, “…by the man He has appointed” (Acts 17:31; 10:42; Ro. 2:16). Matthew Henry rightly sees the illusion to Christ noting, “His coming draws nigh; this King, this Judge standeth before the door, but he is not yet come.” Still, we eagerly await the return of our King.
- What then is our response? A Poem by Corey McLaughlin:
Our God Reigns!
Our God reigns over the mountains and deep in the sea,
Our God reigns from Mt. Carmel, to Sinai, to under my feet.
Our God reigns in the morning, in the noon, in the night,
He reigns in the bloody battle in the midst of the fight.
He reigns o’er the meadows of rolling green hills,
in cracks and in crevice of rocks laid so still.
Over murderers and rapists all evil beguiled,
Over death and disease, I am His child.
Nothing can stop Him, no wisdom of sages,
Our God reigns! Our God reigns! To the end of ages!
